The results of the 2024 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) have finally been released, and we should all be concerned. Math and reading scores continue on a declining trend, with an overwhelming majority of students scoring below proficiency.
The figures above reflect the percentage of 4th and 8th graders who scored below proficiency versus at proficiency on the 2024 NAEP. More than 60% of 4th graders and more than 70% of 8th graders are below proficiency in math and reading.
You might also notice that a greater percentage of 8th graders are below proficiency compared to 4th graders. These data reflect the ineffectiveness of advancing students ahead according to age rather than mastery of prerequisite academic skills. Students are advanced to higher grades because they turn a year older, NOT because they have mastered the prerequisite academic skills required to learn and master higher-level content.
The figures above reflect the average NAEP scores for 4th and 8th graders in math and reading since the test was first administered in the 1970s. You will notice that there has never been a time when the average score was in the proficient range, much less the advanced range. Although COVID did result in lower average scores, scores were already on a declining trend before school closures due to COVID.
In contrast to the abysmal outcomes of our school system, we move our learners to proficiency in 40 hours of instruction. So, in the same amount of time as a typical work week, we advance our learners an entire year in core academic skills. How are such outcomes possible? Through science-driven instruction.
Our school system involves a fanatical adherence to century-old traditions and beliefs about learning that have no basis in science and have NEVER led to effective education for a majority of students. Until those in charge of our school system embrace scientific practices, our educational outcomes will continue to decline.
