The Power of Direct Instruction

“Discovery-based” instruction dominates schools. Teachers are trained not to directly teach anything, but to drop hints or clues about the lesson and have their students guess what they are supposed to be learning. The result? Learners who don’t actually learn anything!

Direct (explicit) Instruction produces learners who can flexibly answer rapid-fire questions about concepts, which leads to fluent execution of those concepts in the natural environment.

Watch a video demonstrating the kind of concept fluency Direct Instruction produces with learners.  The linked video shows one of our stellar Learning Coaches conducting a mastery check on the concept of subject-verb agreement with a learner enrolled in Fit Writing.

Direct Instruction is fast, fun, and profoundly effective! Imagine if instruction occurred this way in every classroom?
